South Jersey’s detox capacity has long clustered at its two ends — Cooper’s programs in Camden and the AtlantiCare and John Brooks Recovery Center programs around Atlantic City. Hammonton sits almost exactly between them on the White Horse Pike, minutes from the Camden, Burlington, and Gloucester county lines. The town gained its first licensed detox in 2018, when Pyramid Healthcare opened a detox and residential program at 600 S. White Horse Pike. A second detox adds capacity to a town that, until 2018, had none.
What a medical detox does
Medical detox is the short, monitored period — usually three to ten days — in which a person stops using a substance under clinical supervision, with medication to keep withdrawal safe and tolerable. It is the first step, not the whole of treatment. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can be medically dangerous without supervision; opioid withdrawal is rarely fatal by itself, but overdose risk spikes in the days after it as tolerance falls, so medical support and naloxone matter. Our detox guides explain what to expect for each substance, and the first 72 hours walks through the admission experience hour by hour.

Who is behind it
Emerald Wellness is DetoxNJ’s featured treatment partner and operates under Periscope Behavioral Health, a network of addiction and mental health programs in New Jersey and Florida. The Hammonton site will be the network’s New Jersey medical detox, and it connects to a continuum that already exists: residential care in Florida for people who need a longer stay after detox, and outpatient programs in South Jersey and Central Jersey for the step-down that follows. DetoxNJ is published by Periscope Behavioral Health; our editorial standards and affiliation disclosure explain how that relationship works and why affiliated facilities are always named plainly.
