Detox Centers in New Jersey: 47 Licensed Programs, by County

We found 47 licensed detox programs in 17 New Jersey counties, checking state and federal directories on October 1, 2026. To get someone in, call a program below or ReachNJ at 1-844-732-2465. With NJ FamilyCare or no insurance, call the IME at 1-844-276-2777. If someone is in danger now, call 911.

If someone is in danger now, call 911

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room if the person:

  • Has a seizure, or has had one during this stretch of not drinking or using
  • Is confused, seeing or hearing things that are not there, or does not know where they are
  • Has chest pain, a racing heart that will not settle, or trouble breathing
  • Is breathing slowly, has blue or gray lips, or cannot be woken up
  • Has tried to harm themselves, is about to, or is a danger to others

If the person will not wake or is breathing slowly, call 911 and treat it as an opioid overdose, even if no one thinks opioids were used: give naloxone if you have it, give another dose every 2 to 3 minutes if they do not wake up, as the package directs, and stay until help arrives. Lay them on their side and keep watching their breathing. For a question about a drug, a mix of drugs or a possible overdose, Poison Control answers 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222. For a mental health or suicide crisis without a medical emergency, call or text 988.

New Jersey’s Overdose Prevention Act protects both a caller who seeks medical help in good faith and the person who overdosed from arrest, charges, prosecution and conviction for simple possession, use and paraphernalia offenses when the evidence comes from seeking that help. It does not cover selling.

Who to call first

There are three ways in. Which one fits depends mostly on your coverage.

  1. Call a program directly. Each program in the directory below lists a phone number. Ask whether it has a bed or an outpatient slot today, whether it takes your insurance, and what it needs from you.
  2. Call ReachNJ at 1-844-732-2465. This is the state’s referral line. A trained specialist answers 24/7 and refers you to a local provider regardless of insurance or ability to pay.
  3. Call the IME Addictions Access Center at 1-844-276-2777 if you have NJ FamilyCare or no insurance. It answers 24/7, screens you and refers you to treatment, and can help with problems such as a wait for a bed.

Expect the first call to cover what you use, how much, when you last used, whether you have had withdrawal seizures, and what medications you take. Wording varies by program. Our step-by-step guide to getting into detox in NJ covers what to bring and what to do if no bed is open.

Licensed detox programs by county

Compiled from the license search in the state’s NJSAMS treatment directory, SAMHSA FindTreatment.gov, NJ DOH hospital licenses and each program’s own website, checked October 1, 2026. Payer details per public directories; confirm before admission. Listing is not an endorsement.

None of the programs listed is affiliated with this site’s publisher. Programs are grouped by county and listed alphabetically, with no ranking and no paid placement. DetoxNJ is published by Periscope Behavioral Health, which operates or holds an ownership interest in Emerald Wellness, South Jersey Recovery Program, Palm Beach Recovery Centers, Palm Beach Healing Centers, and Transitions Recovery Program, and is developing a medical detox in Hammonton, NJ (expected Summer 2027). That Hammonton program is not open and is not listed.

Hospital, inpatient or outpatient detox

The programs below fall into three settings. Clinicians match a person to one using the ASAM Criteria, which ASAM describes as the most widely used set of standards for addiction care placement. Its third-edition withdrawal management levels run from 1-WM (outpatient) to 4-WM (hospital). The fourth edition, released in 2023, changes how withdrawal management fits into its levels. Many programs still use the older labels, and so does this page.

  • Hospital detox unit (4-WM, medically managed). A unit inside a hospital, with physicians directing care around the clock. It is for severe or unstable withdrawal, or medical and psychiatric problems that need a hospital. We list 6 hospital units. None of the sources we reviewed states their ASAM level, so the directory says so instead of guessing.
  • Inpatient residential detox (3.7-WM, medically monitored). You stay in a licensed facility with 24-hour nursing and physicians available. This is what most people mean by “inpatient detox” in New Jersey, and it is the largest group here: 31 programs.
  • Outpatient (ambulatory) detox (1-WM or 2-WM). You sleep at home and come in for assessment and medication. 2-WM adds hours of monitoring on site. We list 10 outpatient programs, and several treat opioid withdrawal only.

About the “Level” line in each listing: where a program states its own ASAM level, we show it. Otherwise the level is inferred from its state license type. An inpatient withdrawal management license is shown as 3.7-WM and an ambulatory license as 2-WM, marked “inferred from license type.” Ask the program to confirm.

How to choose a detox program

Start with safety. ASAM’s alcohol withdrawal guideline says outpatient withdrawal management can typically be done safely for people with limited or mitigated risk factors. Past withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens, use of other substances, serious medical illness, psychiatric symptoms or little support at home push toward inpatient or hospital care. Say all of it on the first call. The program can only place you safely if it knows.

Then ask each program:

  • Does it treat withdrawal from the substances you use? Some outpatient programs treat opioids only.
  • Will it continue medications you already take, including buprenorphine or methadone?
  • What happens after detox? Detox is stabilization, not treatment. Ask how it arranges residential care, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient or medication after discharge.
  • Is it in network with your plan, and what will you owe?

Our guide to choosing a facility lists ten questions to ask before admission.

Paying for detox in New Jersey

Commercial insurance

Fully insured New Jersey plans and the State Health Benefits and School Employees’ plans cannot require prior authorization for the first 180 days per plan year of in-network treatment your own physician, psychologist or psychiatrist finds medically necessary. Self-funded employer plans, Medicare and Medicaid are not covered by that rule. The state Department of Banking and Insurance says ID cards issued in New Jersey must state whether the coverage is fully insured or self-funded. Call the member services number on the card, ask whether the program is in network for withdrawal management, and write down the name of the person you spoke to. Our Horizon BCBS guide walks through the calls for Horizon members.

NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid)

28 of the 47 programs below accept Medicaid according to their own website or FindTreatment.gov. That does not mean a program works with every NJ FamilyCare plan, so give your plan name when you call. You can apply for NJ FamilyCare at 1-800-701-0710. Hospitals and substance use treatment providers that are approved for it can grant short-term presumptive eligibility. See our NJ Medicaid guide for the managed care plans.

State funding when there is no insurance

Call the IME Addictions Access Center at 1-844-276-2777. It answers 24/7, screens callers and refers them to treatment, and its financial screening checks whether you can get state-funded treatment. The only way to know for sure whether you qualify for NJ FamilyCare is to apply, at 1-800-701-0710 on weekdays or at njfamilycare.org.

Counties where we found no licensed detox program

We found no licensed withdrawal management program in Cape May, Cumberland, Salem or Sussex County. Residents there go to a neighboring county. The closest listed options:

If you have NJ FamilyCare or no insurance, the IME at 1-844-276-2777 can screen you and look for an open bed outside your county. If withdrawal turns dangerous, go to the nearest emergency room: hospitals that take Medicare must screen you and stabilize an emergency condition.

  1. Emergency first. Seizure, confusion, chest pain, slow breathing, or someone who will not wake: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. Emergency departments at hospitals that take Medicare must screen you and stabilize an emergency condition whether or not you can pay.
  2. Call a program or a free state line. Call a licensed detox program directly, ReachNJ at 1-844-732-2465, or the IME Addictions Access Center at 1-844-276-2777 (NJ FamilyCare or no insurance). Both state lines answer 24/7.
  3. Screening and insurance check. Expect questions on what you use, how much, when you last used, past withdrawal seizures, medications and health history. Have your insurance card ready.
  4. Admission, or a plan for today. If a bed or outpatient slot is open, you get an arrival time, sometimes the same day. If not, ask for the waitlist, outpatient withdrawal management, or a buprenorphine bridge for opioids. Do not wait at home through alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal with any high-risk sign. Go to an emergency room.

The full admission guide covers what to bring, what verification sounds like, and what to do if no bed is open.

How this list was built

We started from every site listed with a New Jersey withdrawal management license in the NJSAMS Treatment Directory, the addiction treatment directory run by the state Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services. The NJ Department of Health issues those licenses. Hospital detox units operate under hospital licenses and do not appear in that search, so we added them from SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov and checked them against NJ DOH hospital licenses. We then matched each program to its FindTreatment.gov record for payment types and checked its own website. Where a website would not load, the listing says so.

Left out, and why:

  • Methadone and buprenorphine clinics that list “outpatient detox” on FindTreatment.gov but hold no withdrawal management license. Their detox is usually a medication taper.
  • License holders whose own website shows no detox service, or a location its operator no longer lists.
  • An adolescent program that advertises detox but does not appear in the state’s withdrawal management license list.
  • The VA New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange, a federal facility outside state licensing. Eligible veterans can ask the VA about its detox services.

Phone numbers come from each program’s own website or SAMHSA’s FindTreatment.gov. If a program belongs to a chain, the number can be an admissions line shared with the chain’s other centers. If a listing is wrong or a program has closed, tell us and we will check it.

Frequently asked

How many detox centers are in New Jersey?

We list 47 licensed detox (withdrawal management) programs in 17 of New Jersey's 21 counties, checked October 1, 2026: 31 inpatient residential programs, 10 outpatient programs and 6 hospital detox units. Cape May, Cumberland, Salem and Sussex counties had none we could find.

Which detox centers in NJ take Medicaid?

28 of the 47 programs accept Medicaid according to their own website or SAMHSA's FindTreatment.gov. Taking Medicaid does not mean a program works with every NJ FamilyCare plan, so give the program your plan name when you call. NJ FamilyCare members can also call the IME Addictions Access Center at 1-844-276-2777, 24/7, for screening and referral.

Do I need prior authorization for detox in New Jersey?

It depends on the plan.

What if I have no insurance?

Call the IME Addictions Access Center at 1-844-276-2777. It answers 24/7, screens callers, and its financial screening checks whether you can get state-funded treatment. You may also qualify for NJ FamilyCare; apply at 1-800-701-0710. Approved hospitals and substance use treatment providers can grant short-term presumptive eligibility.

Do I need inpatient detox or can I detox as an outpatient?

A clinician decides that at screening. ASAM's alcohol withdrawal guideline says outpatient withdrawal management can typically be done safely for people with limited or mitigated risk factors. Past withdrawal seizures or delirium tremens, other substances, serious medical illness, psychiatric symptoms or little support at home push toward inpatient care. Tell the program about all of these on the first call.

Can I go to the emergency room for detox?

Yes, if withdrawal is severe or you are not sure. Emergency departments at hospitals that take Medicare must screen you and stabilize an emergency condition whether or not you can pay. Seizures, confusion, chest pain or slow breathing mean call 911.

Why isn't a program I know on this list?

The list covers programs with a New Jersey withdrawal management license and hospital detox units. Methadone and buprenorphine clinics that offer a medication taper but hold no withdrawal management license are not included, nor are license holders whose own website shows no detox service, nor federal VA programs. Our publisher's planned Hammonton detox is not open and is not listed. If a listing is wrong, tell us through the contact page.
