The shape of the county

About 860,000 people live between the Raritan River and the Turnpike’s middle exits, in places that have little in common with each other. New Brunswick is a hospital and university city. The institutions to know

Three hospital systems anchor acute care: Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick and Saint Peter’s University Hospital across the street, and Hackensack Meridian’s JFK University Medical Center in Edison and its Raritan Bay campuses in Perth Amboy and Old Bridge. All handle medically dangerous alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal in the emergency department, and several will start buprenorphine there. Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care, the behavioral health arm of Rutgers Health based in Piscataway, runs a wide range of psychiatric and addiction services and operates statewide helplines. Outpatient and step-down

The county has a deep outpatient bench. Language and access

More than half of Middlesex households speak a language other than English at home.
