The county at a glance

About 300,000 people, growing fast along Route 55 and Route 42 as Philadelphia's suburbs push south. Woodbury is the seat, Rowan University in Glassboro adds a large student population with its own patterns of use, and the eastern townships, Monroe (Williamstown), Franklin, and Newfield, run out to the Atlantic County line. The Black Horse Pike and Route 322 both connect the county to Hammonton in about twenty to twenty-five minutes.

Where detox happens now

Maryville, based in Williamstown, has provided inpatient withdrawal management and residential treatment in South Jersey for decades and is the program most Gloucester County clinicians name first for a planned detox. It serves NJ FamilyCare, state-funded, and commercially insured clients, which is rarer than it should be. The county's hospitals, Inspira's medical center in Mullica Hill and Jefferson Health's Washington Township campus, handle emergency stabilization for alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal and can start buprenorphine in the emergency department. When the Hammonton medical detox opens, it adds a second dedicated detox within a short drive of the eastern half of the county.

The systems to know

Beyond Maryville, Inspira and Jefferson both run outpatient behavioral health departments, and the county's community mental health system provides sliding-scale care for people without coverage. Private intensive outpatient programs cluster along Route 42 and in the Sewell and Deptford corridor. Across the Atlantic County line, John Brooks Recovery Center runs opioid treatment programs that draw from Williamstown and Franklin. For Camden-side residents, Cooper's Center for Healing is fifteen minutes up Route 42 and starts medication the same day.

Getting there

Route 55 and Route 42 make the county's western half easy to reach from Philadelphia and Camden; NJ Transit buses run the Black Horse Pike and Route 45 corridors, and the Glassboro-Camden light rail line is under construction but not yet open. Williamstown and the eastern townships are car country. NJ FamilyCare members can book medical transportation through the state's broker.

After detox

Gloucester County's step-down options are among the better ones in South Jersey: Maryville's own outpatient programs, the two hospital systems, and a dense set of private IOPs mean most people can find evening programming within twenty minutes of home.
