Medical Detox in Burlington County, NJ

The shape of the county

Nearly half a million people live here, but they live in two different counties. The western strip along Route 295 and the river, from Bordentown through Burlington City, Willingboro, Moorestown, and Mount Holly, is dense, connected by the River Line light rail, and close to Camden County's hospitals. The eastern two thirds, from Medford and Pemberton out through Shamong, Tabernacle, and the Pinelands townships, is rural, car-dependent, and closer to Hammonton than to any hospital in its own county. Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst sits in the middle, which means a meaningful share of people seeking care here are service members, veterans, or military families with TRICARE or VA coverage.

Where detox happens now

Burlington County has very few dedicated detox beds. Virtua Health, the dominant system, runs emergency departments in Mount Holly and Willingboro that stabilize dangerous alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal and can initiate buprenorphine, but a planned inpatient detox usually means crossing a county line. Western residents route to Camden County, most often to Cooper University Health Care and the programs around it. Eastern residents have historically driven forty minutes in either direction. That is the gap the Hammonton medical detox is built to close: Shamong and Tabernacle border Hammonton, and Medford is about twenty-five minutes down Route 206.

The systems to know

Legacy Treatment Services, headquartered in Hainesport, is the county's largest nonprofit behavioral health provider and runs outpatient and intensive outpatient addiction programs along with mental health services; for many families it is the first call after detox. Virtua's behavioral health department covers psychiatric care and outpatient programs across its South Jersey footprint. South Jersey Recovery Program, an outpatient program in Berlin just over the Camden County line, is part of Periscope Behavioral Health, our publisher; it is close to Medford and Marlton and we note the affiliation wherever we name it. For military families, Joint Base MDL's medical group and the VA's community care network are the coverage path, and the VA's Philadelphia and Wilmington systems both serve the county.

Paying for it

Getting there

The River Line connects Camden and Trenton through the western towns, and NJ Transit buses run the Route 38 and Route 130 corridors. East of Route 206 there is no practical transit, which is why transportation is the first thing to ask any program about. NJ FamilyCare members can book rides through the state's medical transportation broker with a few days' notice. When the Hammonton detox opens, it will be a straight drive down Route 206 for the Pinelands towns and Route 30 for everyone west of it.

After detox

Step-down care is easier to find here than detox is.
