What Does Cocaine Smell Like? Look, Taste, Crack, Cuts, and Slang

Pure cocaine barely smells; the solvents and the cuts do. What powder and crack smell, look, and taste like, what a gram is, what yellow cocaine usually means, what it is cut with, the slang for both, how long it shows in urine, and the one contaminant no sense can detect.

If someone who used cocaine is in trouble

Call 911 for chest pain, a seizure, a severe headache that came on suddenly, confusion, a very high body temperature, or breathing that has slowed or stopped. Cocaine in the current supply is sometimes contaminated with fentanyl, so if the person is hard to wake or breathing slowly, give naloxone (Narcan) if you have it and keep giving a dose every 2 to 3 minutes until they respond. Lay them on their side and stay until help arrives. Naloxone reverses opioids only; it does nothing for cocaine itself, so keep watching them even after they wake. If someone is having thoughts of suicide during a crash, call or text 988.

What does cocaine smell like?

Faintly of chemicals, and often of nothing at all. Pure cocaine hydrochloride is close to odorless. What people notice comes from the solvents used to process it, kerosene, gasoline, acetone, ether, and from whatever it was cut with afterward. The most common descriptions are a sweet, floral, or perfumed chemical smell, a nail-polish-remover or gasoline edge, and sometimes a metallic note. Two batches can smell different because the smell is mostly residue, and the residue depends on how that batch was made.

A powder that smells strongly of anything is a powder with a lot of something else in it. Smell is not a purity test. It is not a safety test either, because fentanyl has no smell at all.

What does crack smoke smell like?

Crack smoke is what most people mean when they ask about a cocaine smell in a room or a car. It is sharp and chemical: burning plastic, burning rubber, sometimes a sweet, cloying edge. It does not smell like cannabis, and it does not smell like tobacco. Unlike powder cocaine, it lingers, in fabric and in a closed car, which is why the smell is so often the first thing a family notices.

What does cocaine taste like?

Bitter, with a numbing effect on the tongue and gums. Cocaine is a local anesthetic, and the numbness is the reason for the folk “gum test.” The test is worthless. Lidocaine, benzocaine, and procaine, three of the most common cutting agents, numb the gums exactly the same way, so a numb gum tells you the powder contains an anesthetic, not that it contains cocaine.

What does cocaine look like?

  • Powder cocaine. A fine, white to off-white powder, sometimes with a faint shimmer or a flaky, pearlescent texture that users call “fish scale.” It is usually sold in small folded paper packets, tiny zip bags, or the corner of a larger bag twisted off.
  • Crack cocaine. Off-white, cream, or yellowish rocks or chips, waxy or brittle, irregular in shape, from pebble-sized to a small chunk. Sold in small vials or bags. The name comes from the crackling sound it makes when heated.
  • Freebase. The same smokable form as crack, made a different way, less common now.

What does a gram of coke look like?

A gram of powder is a pile of about a quarter of a teaspoon. It fits in a folded square of paper the size of a stamp. An “eight ball” is an eighth of an ounce, about 3.5 grams. Prices vary, and a gram from one seller is rarely the same weight or purity as a gram from another.

What color is cocaine, and what does yellow cocaine mean?

Pure cocaine hydrochloride is white. Off-white and cream are common and mean little. Yellow, tan, or beige cocaine usually means impurities left from processing, oxidation, or a cut, and occasionally a batch that was rushed. Pink cocaine, sold under that name in nightlife markets, is usually not cocaine at all, but a mix built mostly on ketamine and MDMA, with dye. Color tells you something was added or left behind. It never tells you purity, in either direction.

What is cocaine cut with?

Almost always something. The cuts fall into three groups, and one of them is deadly.

  • Bulking agents: sugars such as mannitol and inositol, baking soda, caffeine, and creatine. Cheap, mostly harmless, there to add weight.
  • Mimics: lidocaine, benzocaine, and procaine, which numb the gums so the powder passes the folk test, and levamisole, a veterinary deworming drug that has been the dominant cocaine adulterant in this country since the late 2000s. It can destroy white blood cells and cause skin necrosis, harms documented in a 2012 review in Clinical Toxicology, which reported that the DEA found levamisole in 69 percent of cocaine seized in 2009. Most cocaine now arrives in the country uncut, and the cuts go in downstream; levamisole is still turning up in people who overdose, in more than one in eight opioid overdose patients tested between 2020 and 2024.
  • Fentanyl. Adulteration of cocaine with fentanyl is a major contributor to overdose deaths, per the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s cocaine topic page; it gets there sometimes from deliberate mixing and sometimes from contaminated equipment. U.S. overdose deaths involving cocaine fell from 29,449 in 2023 to 21,945 in 2024, per CDC Data Brief 549, Table 5, which is a trend and not an all-clear. A person with no opioid tolerance who snorts cocaine laced with fentanyl can stop breathing. This is why naloxone belongs near anyone who uses cocaine, and why the emergency box on this page reads the way it does.

Cocaine and crack slang

The DEA’s cocaine fact sheet lists a short official set: blow, coca, coke, crack, crank, flake, rock, snow, and soda cot. The table below adds the names in current street use.

Powder cocaineCrack cocaineCombinations
Coke, blow, snow, white, powderRock, hard, base, crackSpeedball: cocaine with heroin or fentanyl
Yayo, yeyo, nose candy, girlCookies, nuggets, gravel, hailCocaine with alcohol: the combination that forms cocaethylene
Charlie, flake, line, bump, keyWork, 24-7, candy, badrockEight ball: an eighth of an ounce, about 3.5 grams

Two of the combination words deserve their own sentence. A speedball is cocaine taken with an opioid, historically heroin and now often fentanyl, and it is one of the most dangerous patterns in the drug supply, because the stimulant masks the opioid sedation until the stimulant wears off first and the person stops breathing. And cocaethylene is not slang but chemistry: when cocaine and alcohol are in the body together, the liver produces a third compound, cocaethylene, which has a longer elimination half-life than cocaine and which, per the same NIDA page, may increase the toxic effects of cocaine and alcohol on the heart. The combination raises heart rate more than either drug alone and pushes blood cocaine levels up by as much as 30 percent, per a 2002 review in Addiction. Combining the two is common. Few people know the combination forms a third compound.

How long does cocaine stay in your urine?

At standard cutoffs, cocaine itself leaves the blood within hours. Urine tests do not look for it; they look for its main metabolite, benzoylecgonine, which lingers. Blood and saliva tests can catch the parent drug for a short window.

  • Urine: benzoylecgonine is usually detectable for two to three days after a single use, and often three to four days after heavy, repeated use; a week or longer has been reported
  • Blood: cocaine for hours; the metabolite for a day or two
  • Saliva: one to two days
  • Hair: up to about 90 days

These are typical ranges from the federal Medical Review Officer manual, the ASAM drug-testing consensus and a 2002 study of chronic cocaine users, not guarantees; dose, frequency, body weight, and lab cutoffs all move them. Two details matter. Cocaine’s metabolite is on the federal workplace urine panel under both HHS and DOT rules. And cocaethylene, the compound formed with alcohol, stays detectable in blood for several hours longer than cocaine, per a 2019 forensic drug profile. For every test type, heavy use, cocaethylene and false positives, see how long cocaine stays in your system.

What smell, look, and slang cannot tell you

Whether the powder is cocaine. Whether it carries fentanyl. Whether the person is dependent. A baggie and a smell are reasons to ask, not conclusions. Our guide to what different drugs do to the eyes covers the other physical signs, and the family guide covers how to raise it.

Signs that go beyond a smell: a runny or bleeding nose with no cold, dilated pupils, bursts of talk and confidence followed by irritability and sleep, money gone, rolled bills and razor-scraped surfaces, or a glass stem with steel wool in it. That pattern is worth a direct conversation and a call.

What detox looks like for cocaine

Cocaine withdrawal does not threaten the body the way alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal does. The crash brings exhaustion, hunger, vivid dreams, and a depression that can reach suicidal thinking, usually worst in the first few days and easing over one to two weeks. There is no FDA-approved medication for it; contingency management, a structured reward program, is the standard of care in the 2024 ASAM/AAAP stimulant use disorder guideline, which also confirms that any medication is used off-label. Our stimulant detox guide covers the timeline. If cocaine has been mixed with alcohol or opioids, the other drug’s withdrawal may be the medically dangerous one, and a clinician needs the full list. If someone is having thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.

In New Jersey

Under New Jersey law P.L.2017, c.28, fully insured New Jersey plans and the State Health Benefits and School Employees’ plans cannot require prior authorization for the first 180 days per plan year of in-network treatment your own physician, psychologist or psychiatrist finds medically necessary, and cannot run concurrent or retrospective medical-necessity review for the first 28 days of an in-network inpatient stay. Self-funded employer plans, Medicare and Medicaid are not covered by that rule, so verify with the plan. NJ FamilyCare covers the substance use continuum, from withdrawal management through outpatient care, with the level of care set by ASAM criteria and, for some levels, prior authorization.
