What Happens During Medical Detox? A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Admission and assessment

For opioids it typically means buprenorphine started once withdrawal is measurable on the COWS scale. Fluids, electrolytes, and thiamine correct the deficiencies that make people feel worst.

Step 3: Peak withdrawal and monitoring

The 24 to 72 hour window is the most intensive. Nurses check vitals every two to four hours, adjust medications, and manage sleep, anxiety, and nausea. Alcohol seizure risk peaks here. Opioid symptoms — body aches, gastrointestinal distress — peak and then decline.

Step 4: Recovery, groups, and planning
