Wellbutrin Withdrawal: Symptoms, Timeline, and Whether You Need to Taper

Most people who stop Wellbutrin (bupropion) have mild discontinuation symptoms or none, and published reports of true bupropion withdrawal are rare. The bigger risks are depression coming back and, for anyone who drinks heavily or takes benzodiazepines, seizures. Any taper should be planned with the prescriber.

When stopping or changing Wellbutrin is an emergency

Call 911 for a seizure, fainting, chest pain, or confusion. If someone took more bupropion than prescribed, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away, even if they seem fine; seizures were reported in about a third of bupropion overdoses. If stopping, starting, or changing the dose brings thoughts of suicide, call or text 988.

Wellbutrin withdrawal: the short answer

Bupropion withdrawal shows up in the medical literature as a handful of case reports, starting with a 1999 report of a man who stopped his smoking-cessation course abruptly and felt flu-like five days later, and a 2024 letter whose author still describes such reports as rare. That is very different from the picture for paroxetine or venlafaxine.

Rare is not never, and withdrawal is not the only thing that happens when the drug stops. Depression can come back. And bupropion has one property that matters a great deal on a detox site: it lowers the seizure threshold, and its label lists anyone abruptly stopping alcohol or benzodiazepines as someone who should not take it.

Generic nameBupropion hydrochloride (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL, generics)
ClassAminoketone antidepressant; weak norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor. It does not block serotonin reuptake.
Controlled substance?No
Approved usesMajor depression; prevention of seasonal (winter) depression (XL). Bupropion SR has also been approved for quitting smoking, first as the brand Zyban (now discontinued), and bupropion is one of the two drugs in Contrave and in Auvelity.
Half-lifeAbout 21 hours for bupropion; about 20, 33, and 37 hours for its three active metabolites
Time to steady stateAbout 8 days of daily dosing
WithdrawalUncommon; when reported, irritability, anxiety, poor sleep, headache, and aches
Biggest stopping riskReturn of depression; seizures if alcohol or benzodiazepines are stopped abruptly while bupropion is on board

Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms

The published cases describe a recognizable cluster. In the 1999 report: irritable mood, anxiety, trouble sleeping, headache, and generalized aches, which the patient took for the flu. Restarting a low dose cleared them within 36 hours, and a slow taper afterward went without trouble. In the 2024 report: body aches, drowsiness, dizziness, anxiety, and agitation, starting two days after the last dose.

Why so few reports? Bupropion works on norepinephrine and dopamine and leaves serotonin reuptake alone. The large reviews of antidepressant discontinuation are dominated by serotonergic drugs: a 2024 meta-analysis in The Lancet Psychiatry of 79 studies found desvenlafaxine, venlafaxine, imipramine, and escitalopram associated with more frequent discontinuation symptoms, and imipramine, paroxetine, and (des)venlafaxine with more severe ones. Across all antidepressants, it estimated that about one in six to seven people who stop have symptoms attributable to the drug, and about 3 percent have severe ones. Bupropion was not among the drugs it flagged.

Side effects of stopping Wellbutrin

Separate two things that can feel the same. Discontinuation symptoms start within days and usually fade. A relapse of depression tends to show itself later: low mood, loss of interest, sleep and appetite changes that settle in rather than spiking and leaving. So keep watching mood for weeks after the last dose, not only the first few days. Britain’s NICE depression guideline notes that relapse does not usually happen as soon as an antidepressant is stopped, and tells clinicians to watch for both during any taper. If low mood after stopping turns into thoughts of suicide, call or text 988. If you took bupropion to quit smoking, the urge to smoke can return too, and that is not withdrawal from bupropion.

Wellbutrin missed dose symptoms

Bupropion and its active metabolites have long half-lives, so a single missed dose may cause little, though NICE notes that missed doses of any antidepressant can bring on withdrawal symptoms. The rule the label stresses runs the other way. The Wellbutrin XL label tells patients not to take an extra tablet to make up for a missed one, because seizure risk rises with dose. Take the next dose at the usual time.

Bupropion withdrawal timeline

WhenWhat may happen
Days 1–2Usually nothing. Drug levels are still falling from steady state. The 2024 case began on day 2.
Days 2–7The window in which the reported cases started (day 2 and day 5): irritability, anxiety, poor sleep, headache, aches, dizziness
Weeks 1–2Antidepressant discontinuation symptoms, when they happen, usually go away within one to two weeks (NICE)
Weeks to monthsOccasionally symptoms last longer. This is also the window in which a depression relapse tends to show itself, so mood is worth watching well past the last dose.

Treat the table as a range, not a schedule. Two published cases are not enough to define a bupropion-specific timeline, and the week-two and later rows come from guidance on antidepressants as a group.

How long does Wellbutrin stay in your system?

About a week, as a rough estimate. The label gives a mean half-life of 21 hours for bupropion itself and about 20, 33, and 37 hours for hydroxybupropion, erythrohydrobupropion, and threohydrobupropion, its active metabolites. A drug is mostly cleared after roughly five half-lives, which puts bupropion at four to five days and its slowest metabolite at about eight. Those are averages with wide individual variation, and liver disease stretches them, and the label calls for lower doses in hepatic impairment for that reason.

Does Wellbutrin show up on a drug test?

Bupropion is not one of the drugs a standard workplace panel looks for. It can, however, trigger a false-positive amphetamine result on some urine immunoassay screens, and the label notes this can happen even after the drug is stopped. A confirmatory test such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry tells the two apart. If you take bupropion and are being tested, tell the lab or the medical review officer.

Do you have to taper off Wellbutrin?

The current Wellbutrin XL label says yes, briefly. For Wellbutrin XL at 300 mg a day, it instructs prescribers to drop to 150 mg once daily before stopping, and the seasonal-depression instructions describe the same step down each spring.

The evidence behind that step is thin in both directions. In a 1999 letter, a pharmacist from the manufacturer reported that withdrawal symptoms were not observed in more than 10,000 trial patients followed for a week after stopping abruptly, and argued against a general taper recommendation. The label today asks for one anyway, and guidance on antidepressants in general, including NICE, favors stepping down over stopping cold.

Can you stop Wellbutrin cold turkey?

Many people have without trouble, but that is not a reason to do it on your own. The question is less about withdrawal than about what the drug was doing. Someone who has been stable on bupropion for depression needs a plan for what happens if the depression returns, and the label asks for close monitoring at any dose change, whether an increase or a decrease. Someone taking it with alcohol or a benzodiazepine in the picture has a seizure question to answer first. Do not stop a prescribed medication by yourself; make the plan with the prescriber.

How to wean off Wellbutrin

A prescriber will usually look at four things: the dose and form (IR, SR, or XL), how long you have taken it, why you are stopping (side effects, feeling well, switching drugs, pregnancy), and how your depression behaved the last time treatment ended. From there the step-down might be as short as the label’s single step or longer for someone who felt symptoms on a missed day. A good plan includes follow-up after the last dose, because NICE asks clinicians to monitor for both withdrawal and a return of depression, and relapse tends to show up later than withdrawal.

Is Wellbutrin addictive?

Bupropion is not a controlled substance, and taken by mouth at prescribed doses it is not meaningfully rewarding. In the label’s abuse studies, a single 400 mg dose given to people experienced with drugs produced mild amphetamine-like effects, and the label concludes that normal divided doses are unlikely to reinforce use by people who misuse stimulants.

The exception is misuse by other routes. The label reports crushed tablets being snorted and dissolved tablets being injected, with seizures and deaths. Crushing a drug that lowers the seizure threshold defeats the slow release it was designed around. If someone is crushing bupropion, it is worth asking about stimulant use; the label notes that higher doses might be modestly attractive to people who misuse stimulants. Our stimulant detox guide covers that.

Wellbutrin, alcohol, benzodiazepines, and seizures

This is the part of the bupropion story that belongs on a detox site. Seizure risk on bupropion is dose-related. In the label’s data, the rate was about 0.1 percent with the SR form up to 300 mg a day, about 0.4 percent with the immediate-release form at 300 to 450 mg, and it rose almost tenfold between 450 and 600 mg.

Wellbutrin is contraindicated in anyone undergoing abrupt discontinuation of alcohol, benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or antiepileptic drugs. Withdrawal from alcohol and benzodiazepines can cause seizures on its own. Bupropion lowers the threshold. Together they stack. The label also lists heavy use of alcohol, sedatives, and opioids, and use of cocaine or misused stimulants, as factors that raise the risk, and it reports rare cases of reduced alcohol tolerance and neuropsychiatric reactions in people who drank on bupropion.

In practice: if you take bupropion and drink every day, or take Xanax, Klonopin, or another benzodiazepine daily, do not stop the alcohol or the benzodiazepine abruptly at home. Get medical advice first, and tell any detox team about the bupropion at intake so they can decide what to do with it during withdrawal. Our alcohol detox guide and alcohol withdrawal timeline cover the seizure window; the benzodiazepine detox guide covers why benzodiazepines are tapered rather than stopped. Our page on whether you can die from alcohol withdrawal looks at what the death rates show.

Tell the detox team: every antidepressant and the dose, including bupropion prescribed for smoking or weight (Contrave contains it); how much and how often you drink; any benzodiazepine, sleeping pill, or seizure medication; and any seizure, ever. That list changes how withdrawal is managed.

When stopping Wellbutrin is really about something else

People often ask about stopping an antidepressant at the same moment they are thinking about stopping drinking or other drug use. The two are tangled: depression drives drinking, and drinking deepens depression. Treating one and ignoring the other is the common reason both come back. Programs that handle both at once are usually called dual diagnosis or co-occurring treatment, and the aftercare guide covers how psychiatric care should continue after detox. Our page on trazodone withdrawal covers the other antidepressant most often prescribed in early recovery. For the step after detox, see choosing the right next level of care.

Frequently asked

What does Wellbutrin withdrawal feel like?

When they happen, the reported symptoms are irritability, anxiety, trouble sleeping, headache, body aches, dizziness, drowsiness, and agitation. Published cases are rare, and most people who stop bupropion have mild symptoms or none.

How long does Wellbutrin withdrawal last?

In the published cases symptoms began two to five days after the last dose. Antidepressant discontinuation symptoms in general usually fade within one to two weeks, though they occasionally last longer. A return of depression can appear later, so mood is worth watching for several weeks.

How many days does it take bupropion to leave your body?

About a week, as a rough estimate. Bupropion's average half-life is about 21 hours and its active metabolites' half-lives range from about 20 to 37 hours; at roughly five half-lives, the slowest metabolite is mostly cleared in about eight days. It varies between people, and liver disease lengthens it.

Does the Wellbutrin XL label say to taper before stopping?

The Wellbutrin XL label tells prescribers to reduce 300 mg a day to 150 mg before stopping. Withdrawal is uncommon, but tapering with the prescriber also allows time to watch for a return of depression. Do not stop it on your own.

Can you stop Wellbutrin cold turkey?

Many people have without problems, but it should be a decision made with the prescriber. Stopping abruptly is most risky when depression has been severe or when alcohol or benzodiazepines are also being stopped.

Can Wellbutrin be misused?

Bupropion is not a controlled substance and is not meaningfully rewarding at prescribed oral doses. Crushing and snorting or injecting it has been reported and has caused seizures and deaths.

Can Wellbutrin cause a false positive drug test?

Yes. Bupropion can cause false-positive amphetamine results on some urine immunoassay screens, even after it is stopped. A confirmatory test such as GC/MS distinguishes bupropion from amphetamine.

Is it safe to quit drinking while taking Wellbutrin?

Not abruptly and not alone if you drink heavily. The label lists abrupt discontinuation of alcohol or benzodiazepines as a contraindication because both withdrawal and bupropion raise seizure risk. Get medical advice before stopping, and tell any detox team about the bupropion.
