What the overdose numbers changed
Ocean, Atlantic, and Camden counties have posted some of the state’s highest per-capita overdose rates for years, and New Jersey’s Opioid Settlement funds have directed real money here — peer recovery specialists in emergency rooms, expanded naloxone distribution, and low-barrier buprenorphine programs that start medication the day you ask for it. The practical effect: this region is often the easiest place in New Jersey to start medication-assisted treatment quickly.
The systems to know
Cooper University Health Care’s Center for Healing in Camden runs one of the country’s best-known low-barrier addiction medicine programs. AtlantiCare Behavioral Health covers detox, PHP, and IOP in Atlantic County, where John Brooks Recovery Center has provided opioid treatment for generations. In Ocean County, Community Medical Center in Toms River handles hospital-based stabilization and Preferred Behavioral Health runs the outpatient continuum. Cape May and the southern shore counties have thinner coverage — residents there often travel toward Atlantic City or Camden for detox, then step down to care closer to home.
New detox capacity in Hammonton
The gap between Camden and Atlantic City narrowed in 2018, when Pyramid Healthcare opened a licensed detox and residential program at 600 S. A caution about marketing
Because this region’s overdose crisis is well documented, its residents are heavily targeted by out-of-state treatment marketing — call centers offering free flights to Florida programs, often with undisclosed financial arrangements. Some people do well traveling for treatment. But leaving the state means leaving your insurance network in some cases, your family support, and your aftercare options behind.
